Welcome to the Matamata Historical Society

The Matamata Historical Society Inc (MHS) facilitates and promotes the understanding of
the history of the Matamata district in two main ways:

Collecting & Storing Information

Making available information and artefacts related to our shared local history, this is the function of MHS’ Matamata district archives.

Curating Relevant Displays

Curating and maintaining relevant displays at the Firth Tower Museum (which is run separately by the Matamata-Piako District Council, MPDC).

Preserving Matamata’s Stories Since 1978

Established and run by local volunteers, MHS has been working towards preserving and passing on local history information and artefacts since 1978. Over decades we have received donations of significant local history materials which are on display in MPDC’s Firth Tower Museum.

Firth Tower Musuem

In 1977 Josiah Clifton Firth's former Matamata Station on Tower Road became the Matamata district museum precinct. Extending over five acres with a 1902 farmhouse, Firth tower itself and other buildings relocated from the area, the museum is a significant local landmark run and maintained by MPDC. MHS has a separate purpose-built meeting room and archival storage at the back of the museum.
